Wireless headphones are one of the most frequently discounted electronics categories - stores such as Media Expert or x-kom almost always list dozens of models on promotion, and AliExpress hundreds. The problem is that spec sheets are full of abbreviations: ANC, TWS, aptX, IPX5, multipoint. In this guide we explain what really affects everyday comfort and which parameters are mostly marketing - so that a big discount does not hide a poor match.
Types of wireless headphones
- TWS earbudsSmall, fully wireless buds with a charging case. The most universal choice: they work on the go, at the gym and at a desk. This is also the group with the most frequent promotions.
- On-ear and over-earBigger cups usually mean better bass, longer battery life and more effective noise cancelling. A natural pick for work and travel, less comfortable in summer and on the move.
- Sport models with hooks or a neckbandDesigns built for a stable fit while running or training, often with increased resistance to sweat and rain.
- Gaming headsetsThe priority is low audio latency and a good microphone. They usually connect through a dedicated 2.4 GHz dongle rather than plain Bluetooth.
The specs that really matter
- ANC (active noise cancelling)Microphones pick up ambient noise and the headphones cancel it out. A huge difference on a bus, a train or in an open space. Effectiveness varies a lot - in budget models it can be symbolic.
- Battery lifeCount realistically: manufacturers quote figures without ANC and at medium volume. Good TWS buds play 6-8 hours on a charge, and the case adds 3-4 full cycles.
- Codecs (AAC, aptX, LDAC)On an iPhone AAC is all you need. On Android, aptX or LDAC give higher quality with streaming services - but you will mostly hear the difference in a quiet room and on better drivers.
- MultipointA simultaneous connection to two devices, e.g. a laptop and a phone. Very convenient at work - the headphones switch to the ringing phone by themselves.
- IPX ratingIPX4 is enough for workouts and rain, IPX7 survives brief immersion. For ordinary listening at home this parameter does not matter.
Important
If you are choosing headphones for calls, look for noise-reducing microphones (ENC) and reviews recorded in street traffic - that is a more common weak point of cheap models than music quality itself.
What is usually not worth paying extra for
A declared range above 10 metres, proprietary "3D sound modes" or apps with dozens of equalizer settings rarely translate into everyday comfort. The same goes for wireless charging of the case - a nice extra, but it should not decide the purchase. Instead, check the prosaic things: whether the buds actually stay in your ears (ear-tip sizes in the box), how the touch controls work and whether each earbud can be used on its own.
How to judge whether a headphone promotion is genuine
Headphones are a category where "discounts" are sometimes counted from inflated list prices. Under the Omnibus directive a store must show the lowest price from the 30 days before the discount - compare the promotion against that number, not the crossed-out regular price. It is also worth checking the price history in a comparison tool: popular TWS models can cost less than in a "huge sale" a few weeks earlier.
The best deals appear in cycles: when a new generation launches (the predecessor drops 30-50%), during Black Friday and seasonal sales, and in outlet sections, where nearly new open-box units sell cheaper with full consumer rights.
Which headphones for what - a quick cheat sheet
- For the office and travelOver-ear with ANC or TWS buds with good cancelling and multipoint. Long-hours comfort is what counts.
- For the gym and runningSport TWS with IPX4 or higher and a stable fit. An ambient mode adds safety on the street.
- For home and musicOver-ear models with bigger drivers, and on Android ones with aptX/LDAC. ANC matters less, sound quality is the priority.
- For gamingA headset with a 2.4 GHz dongle and a boom microphone. Plain Bluetooth has too much latency for fast-paced games.
