The most common question after ordering on AliExpress is "where is my package?". Tracking a parcel from China is different from tracking a domestic courier - the shipment passes through several independent systems (the seller, the Chinese carrier, international transport, customs, and the local delivery company), and each updates at its own pace. Several days of silence in the tracking history usually does not mean the parcel is lost.
Where to find the tracking number
A tracking number appears only once the seller ships the order, usually 1 to 5 days after payment. Before that, the order status only confirms payment and preparation.
- The AliExpress app or websiteGo to "My orders" → select the order → "Track order". This is the most reliable source because it merges seller and carrier data.
- The shipping confirmation emailAliExpress sends a notification with the number when the seller dispatches the parcel.
- Placeholder numbersSellers sometimes enter a number before the carrier actually accepts the parcel. The number then returns nothing for the first few days - this is normal.
Where to track the shipment
- AliExpress / CainiaoMost orders, including Choice, are handled by Cainiao logistics. The status inside the AliExpress app is usually enough and updates fastest.
- Aggregators like 17track or ParcelsUseful when a parcel moves between carriers. They show events from multiple systems on one timeline.
- The final local carrierAfter customs the parcel is handed to a local operator. From that point its own tracking page holds the freshest data.
Important
If a number looks unlike a typical carrier format, check it in an aggregator - a single tracking site may not recognise it even though the shipment exists.
What the statuses mean
- Order shippedThe seller generated a label. The parcel may still be sitting in the warehouse.
- Accepted by carrierThe carrier physically has the parcel. Real transit time starts here.
- Departed from country of originThe parcel has left China. This usually begins the longest quiet period.
- In transitThe shipment is on its way. No updates for 7–14 days at this stage is typical, especially for land or sea transport.
- Arrived at destination countryThe parcel reached the destination country and is waiting for customs.
- Customs clearanceCustoms processing is underway. Usually 1–5 working days, longer if the parcel is selected for inspection.
- Handed over to local carrierThe local delivery company took over. Delivery typically follows within 1–3 days.
When to start worrying
The date that matters is not your gut feeling but the Buyer Protection deadline shown in the order details. While that countdown runs, you still have leverage - and it defines the moment you must act.
A genuine warning sign is no update at all for over 20 days after "accepted by carrier", or a parcel stuck at the same transit hub for more than two weeks. Message the seller through the order chat first - ask for an explanation and the current tracking number, since sellers sometimes repack shipments and the number changes.
Important
Never extend Buyer Protection as a favour when the seller asks and tracking shows no real movement. Extending removes your right to open a dispute; it does not speed up delivery.
Lost parcel - step by step
- 1. Message the sellerGive them 3–5 days to respond. The chat transcript later serves as evidence in a dispute.
- 2. Open a dispute before protection endsChoose "Open dispute" in the order and select non-delivery as the reason. Attach screenshots of the tracking history.
- 3. Ask for a full refundFor an undelivered parcel there is no reason to accept the partial refund sellers often propose first.
- 4. Escalate to AliExpressIf the seller rejects the claim, the platform steps in. No proof of delivery in the carrier system works in your favour.
- 5. Chargeback as a last resortIf you paid by card and the platform did not resolve it, file a claim with your bank. Deadlines depend on the card scheme and bank, so do not wait.
Why tracking sometimes "does not work"
- The number exists but the carrier has not scanned the parcel yet - wait 3–5 days.
- The shipment is being consolidated and is only scanned once the batch is complete.
- The seller gave a number for a shipment that does not contain your order - a warning sign, ask directly.
- The cheapest shipping methods have limited tracking and only show dispatch and delivery.
